Description

Gordon Cochrane Home (1878 – 1969) was an English landscape artist, writer and illustrator.

He was born in London and worked as an art editor on various Edwardian magazines, including “The King” and later in a similar capacity at the publishers A & C Black. Home worked mainly in watercolour and pen and ink, frequently exhibiting at the Royal Academy. The watercolour illustrations in this book are not by him, but the pen and ink vignettes are. Home wrote and illustrated literally dozens of travel and history books for Blacks and other publishers.

Aimed at younger readers, these types of books, with colourful covers, were popular as school prizes.

About half this work is taken up with a brief history of the GWR, descriptions of locomitives and rolling stock, a description of Swindon Works and a short biography of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The remainder consists of descriptions of the three main GWR routes from tourist viewpoint  – London to Bristol and South Wales, Bristol to the West Country, and Swindon to the Midlands and North West.
