Description

Despite “Austerity” and the disruption arising from nationalization, British Railways still managed to produce this attractive publication, celebrating the centenary of Britains oldest named train “The Irish Mail”, which ran daily from Euston to Holyhead. By a long standing tradition, dating back to stage coach days, on departure the guard was given a leather pouch containing a chronometer set to Greenwich mean time for Dublin to set its clocks by. Although published by the nationalized Railway Executive, the booklet still bears the imprint  “ERO”- Executive Research Office, (of the LMS) a kind of “Gestapo” of the stationery cupboard, which attempted to rigorously control the use of paper throughout the company.
