LIVERPOOL SHIPPING – A SHORT HISTORY by George Chandler, Phoenix House, 1960.[ebook]

Hard back book, cream boards, coloured dust jacket, 9”x 6”, pp. 256, frontispiece,54 B&W plates, 36 line drawings endpapers showing world wide routes of the Cunard Group, service routes of the Blue Funnel Line. (Line drawings illustrate flags and funnels of members of the Liverpool Steam Boat Owners Association).

George Chandler was Librarian of the City of Liverpool and was therefore well placed with access to local records and newspaper files to research and write this book. While it is described as “A Short History” it is pretty comprehensive, dealing with shipping services up to 1 January 1958.

It therefore portrays Liverpool shipping just past the zenith of post WWII activity, before the containerisation revolution took hold.
