Description

Drivers handbook for the Sulzer type 4 (later class 45) diesel electric locomotive. Together with the slightly earlier class 44 and the sightly later class 46, They were all very similar in appearance and were often referred to as “Peaks” as thefirst ten of class 44 were named after English and Welsh mountains. Descended from the LMS “Twins” 10,000 and 10,001, they were designed after the former had undergone extensive trial running, and also incorporated lessons learned from 10201-3, ordered by the Southern Railway, but not delivered until after Nationalisation.

Built at Derby Works, and Crewe Works 1960 – 62, they were the main motive power on the Midland Main Line for two decades, before being displaced by HSTs. They then were in regular use on the North Transpennine line until withdrawal in 1988-9

This booklet not only describes how to drive a “Peak”, but is also full of handy hints for fault finding, if you switch it on and it will not go…
