Description
As soon as war broke out, all railway poster on stations, except colourful resort posters which did not carry timetable or fare information were washed down. They were replaced by terse black on white letterpress posters detailing air raid precautions, blanket reduction in train services and speeds, and the withdrawal of luxury high speed streamlined trains The rolling stock for these was mothballed, and would not reappear until after the war, and then not in their original liveries. Restaurant Cars and other on train catering services were also canceled, but began to make a gradual reappearance later in October.
So did information posters about train services bearing the badges of the main railway companies and London transport, The first illustrated posters since the war began,albeit based on black and white photos, appeared in January 1940. In the same month, two words which were set in Gill Sans, and destined to become increasingly familiar over the next 30 years BRITISH RAILWAYS began to be used, instead of Railway Executive, for posters applicable to the main line companies.
