Description

Founded in February 1878 (not to be confused with the Cyclists touring club, founded April 1878) was for many years one of the governing bodies for cycle sport in the UK. As its name implies, it had political objectives in opposing legislation likely to prove detrimental to the interests of cyclists, and in lobbying for road surface improvements, the erection of road signs warning of dangers to cyclists. It organised road races and drew up rules including strict conditions limiting entry to true amateurs. It published guides for touring and arranged inspection of hotels, guest houses, restaurants and cafes offering a welcome to cyclists, and organised social events around the country. From the beginning, it was professionally organised and run, while the Cyclists Touring Club was more of a club run by amateurs for amateurs, and tended to be a bit more “up market”. In the early days, gentlemen members of the CTC were expected to wear a smart uniform when participating in group events, which would price membership out of reach of many.

It was noticable that far more hotels displayed the CTC welcome plaque than did the “Official Quarters” sign of the CU guide, but this was probably the heyday of cycling in Britain, and as cars became more affordable AA and RAC plaques began to join and the supersede those of cycling organisations on hotels and catering establishments. That the hange was already beginning is hinted at in the Foreword to the guide “When a middle aged man gives up his bicycle and takes to a car he puts his second foot in the grave, said a medical man.

“And when did his first go in?”

“When he was born,” was the grim reply.
