The Windermere Nautical Trust was established in 1971, to preserve examples of  craft used on the lake – mainly steam and George Pattinson´s own vessels formed the basis of the exhibits.

In 2007 the collection was taken over by the Lakeland Arts Trust and the museum has recently re-opened following a major renovation.
